Perks of Being a Wallflower is told to the reader through letters that Charlie has written to some anonymous stranger. The book starts off with Charlie beginning his freshman year in high school and he his best friend has just committed suicide. Charlie isn’t afraid to be himself even if that means that he is unpopular, shy, emotional, and full of original thoughts. Charlie quickly befriends Patrick and Sam, who are step brother and sister. Sam becomes the girl who Charlie longs to be romantic with and even after Sam makes it clear that she wants to just be friends Charlie still can’t stop thinking of her in a romantic way. Throughout the book Charlie struggles with figuring out things like what love is, how to deal with girlfriends, who he is, and remembering a secret that he has suppressed the memory of.
